Chapter Nineteen

“Oh my God! Is she—?” He broke off there.

“No, but it’s touch and go. Madison would be dead if the maid hadn’t forgotten her phone and went back for it. Frank says the maid tried to go into the house via the garage. The garage door was locked, but she could hear a car running and smelled the carbon monoxide. She ran into the house and tried the inside door. It was also locked, so she called the police on the landline. They were there in less than three minutes. It doesn’t take much carbon monoxide to kill a person, but the doctors are hopeful she’ll pull through.”

“I wonder if this means what I think it means?” He looked at me.

I looked at him. “That someone tried to kill her because she’s one of the inheritors of the will?” I asked. “To be open-minded, it could be a suicide attempt.”

“Does she strike you as the suicidal type?”

“Not as long as there’s a plastic surgeon plying his trade. That’s why I wanted to know where David was staying just in case someone is trying to eliminate the competitors. The fact he’s staying with friends makes him safer.”

“Especially if one of those friends is Bo. Phil wasn’t kidding when he said you don’t want to be on the bad side of her. But, sweetheart, don’t you think we should have told David about Madison?”

“He’ll know soon enough. Frank told me Fenner’s men are on their way to talk to him now. I can’t help but wonder, where was Madison’s secretary i.e., watchdog, Johan? Doesn’t he live in the house?”

“He does,” Gurn said slowly. “So, where was he?”

“And after that question, is Donna as okay as her family seems to think she is? I’ve got a bad feeling about this.”

By this time, we had arrived at the car. He beeped the doors open and we got in. I shut the passenger side of the car before going on.

“You know, darling, I’ve been thinking,” I said, clicking my seat belt on. “When all this first happened Saturday night I was so shocked I wasn’t thinking clearly. And then I was put on such a tight time frame to clear myself, I went into a panic. But I’ve calmed down now. A lot of what has happened doesn’t make sense unless someone very close by is responsible. And whoever it is, has to have help.”

He started the car and pulled out before asking, “You’re kidding. You’re saying we’re looking for a murderer and a helper? Who? Donna?”

“Don’t know yet. But either way we need to find her. She might not be as safe as everyone thinks she is.”

“So, you don’t think she killed her father?”

“No, she could have done that.”

“So, you do think she killed her father?”

“Possibly. That said, she could have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“I’m confused.”

“I suspect that was the plan all along. The art of confusion and misdirection. We need to get to that cabin as soon as possible.
